Mike Murphy, president and chief executive officer of Sharp HealthCare, was one of 100 leaders across the country — and the only in San Diego — to be recognized as a nonprofit health system CEO to know by Becker’s Hospital Review, a bimonthly publication featuring current business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems.

The CEOs to know were chosen based on the financial strength of their organizations and participation in leadership positions outside of work. Nominations and research were independently conducted by the Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team. Murphy was specifically noted for the creation and launch of an initiative called The Sharp Experience, which aims to enhance patient, employee and physician satisfaction.

A Southern California native, Murphy was appointed to his position in June 1996. He is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach and is a certified public accountant. He served as chairman of the board of the Greater San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2005, and he is a member of the board of directors for the State of California Chamber of Commerce. Murphy is also on the board of directors of the Foundation for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and he is a member and supporter of several community-based health and social service organizations.
